Defense Technology in the Zarqawi Mission
June 10, 2006
After I read the front-page report in the Wall Street Journal yesterday about the US military strike on al-Zarqawi, I knew I had to do a blog post about the cutting edge technology that was used.
- Reportedly, one of Zarqawi’s advisors inadvertantly compromised their position. The advisor was followed to the site by a Predator unmanned aerial vehicle.
- This crucial up-to-the-minute target having thus been identified, F-16s came and deployed two laser- and/or satellite-guided 500lb bombs, which can be released from up to 4 miles away. The planes themselves were likely already in the air on a routine mission, ready with the latest gear to be redirected at a moment’s notice.
Sweet.
Anyway, I’ll leave the real details to the experts and news organizations. Here’s a cool description, entitled The Tech That Took Out Zarqawi.
